I am planning on replacing my first screen!
The old spline measures between 0.149 and 0.164. I assume that is 0.160. Just want to make sure.
Can I reuse the old spline? Perhaps not being round any more means I shouldn't.
The store has MD and Phifer that look pretty much the same. I can't imagine why they have two brands. Is one better than the other?
Thanks.

Welcome.
When you remove the existing spline, from south and west facing installations, primarily, and you see checking, or with it removed, stretch it, and if see any signs of damage, toss it.

Multiple brands, is marketing.

Hi Toller!

The spool of spline I have isn't round. The squared off part helps wedge the screen tightly while you stretch it. It also provides a good paint break. For size, what I have mic'd at 0.158" (Old roll, but I used some recently & it worked)

Re-using the old can be tricky because, for some reason, the ends never want to meet again. If you don't need a whole roll, real mom & pop hardware stores will chop you off a length- often for free.

A roller type spline tool really makes putting splines in easy. It might be worth picking one up if you don't have one already. The back of a butter knife works, too. It's not as easy as the roller, but works.

The old spline measuring between 0.149 and 0.164 inches is likely 0.160 inches. Reusing it is not advisable if it's no longer perfectly round, as it might not hold the screen securely. MD and Phifer are both reputable brands; you can choose either, but Phifer is often known for its durability.
