Hello,

I have a cabin, the main area is a 16X16 ft with a gable roof. On each side is a shed roof addition which is 14 x 16. The shed roof rafters are full 2 x 6 x 14 - 24 oc. Code calls for aprox 9'9" span for a 2 x 6 24 oc.

I could build a partition wall at the 9'9" mark and make the room smaller but would prefer to have as much open space as possible.

I thought about putting a header perpendicular to the rafters at the 9.9 mark and use support columns. The problem with this is at the end walls are windows and the end supports would land right in the middle of the window at each end.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Welcome RiverRat:
You could use metal joist hangers to support a double 2 X 12 beam at the 7' point to distribute the weight evenly and, maybe miss the windows.
