My house use to be rental property. So with that being said what can i use to smooth out the walls from past quick fixes. Someone told me to use joint compound?

The trick is to leave it be when it has a line or two, then sand it down smooth when it dries.
I also us USG products, use the one with the green top as it is not the lightweight type.

Well, I have to agree. Skim coating is often the best way to prep an old
wall or ceiling for paint or new texture.

Some people struggle with this, and that may be because they do not have a clear idea of tools, materials and procedures to use. A good system can go a long way towards making the skim coat project a lot easier.

I have a skim coat tips page on my website. Check my profile for the url.
When you get the site up on your screen, click SKIM COAT in the navigation column.

Best of everything to you!
