Initially I thought there was a clog in the drains. Now after replacing the pump, which does work just fine,
the ultimate issue still seems to be some problem with the air handler itself.

There is water coming from a small overflow outlet next to where the PVC is attached, and I would have no idea
what to do about this. So I suppose the only option at this point would be to call a pro ? Only thing is I did have
one by to check the unit for soundness of operation but he didn't actually check anything related to possible leaks
and just passed it off as a clog that cleared.

The strange thing is that the problem can be intermittent. When I left the unit off for an extended period, and perhaps
all the water drained out, the unit would run for several days with no leak. When I lowered the temp to 72
this started again, keeps leaking even when temperature is put back up to 74, 76. !! I have been through 2 cycles of this now.

Now what could this be? Could someone offer a plausible diagnosis ?

Thanks

Well, condensate is related to humidity not temperature so the temp settings do not have any bearing here.
It looks like the seal from evap coil drip pan to PVC is leaking or the pan is cracked and condensate isn't making its way to the drain pipe.
Study the unit to see where you can gain access to the A-coil and clean it up and seal it with one of today's miracle sealants.

Helpful answer, thanks. I think I can loosen a few screws on the cover to get access. But what should I use to clean the coils,
and could you suggest a sealant type/brand that would be commonly used in this type of application ?

Something along this lines of this ?

or maybe this...

and use the non wash foam for the fins on the coil, I saw a video on it
