Trimming ceiling from entryway into stairway

I bought an old colonial house (1915), and it is in dire need of some cosmetic updates. I have most of it done, but need some ideas to do the trim from the entryway ceiling that is also the wall to the upstairs bedrooms. No rail on this wall, so it is baffling me. Any creative ideas welcome. I'll post pics soon.
