trimming laminate to fit

We have decided to replace our bathroom counter top with a new laminate top. However, we have to build the backsplashes.

We bought the wood, trimmed it down to the correct size, cut the laminate, rolled it on to the wood ......pretty good so far .......the issue is that the lamitate is a little bigger than the wood and needs to be trimmed.

However, no matter what tool we use the lamiate chips / cracks. We bought this double sided edger for lamiate that was supposed to work but it doesn't, it also just chips away leaving jagged edges.

Did we do the process wrong to begin with? Is there a correct way to trim this laminate?

You need a router with a laminate trim bit. The double sided trimmer you bought sounds like a vinyl edge trimmer used mostly on cabinet door and drawer edges. The laminate is supposed to be over sized for trimming, but a router is the best tool to use.

Your laminate trimmer will work just fine if you move it along the laminate edge rather than straight down. Allow it to cut or plane the excess off. Its cheaper than a router and bit.
