So our CRT TV broke and its time for the new HDTVs that are all widescreen, so I need to remove this cupboard but need to keep the fireplace at where it is. What is your opinion on what I should do here?

Welcome Tacsniper:
I say go for it man. It looks like a good central location for the new one, as long as you keep the screen behind the corner of the fireplace it should work just fine. Whereas, if the screen is in front of the fireplace, I would be concerned about too much radiant heat for it.
