My cousin is asking me about replacement windows for her house. I have vinyl and they have been fine. But she has been told about fiberglass windows and even aluminum (?!) replacements. I know that things change over time, and technology evolves, so what's the state of the art right now? And what's snake oil in replacement windows?

Whatever she decides on, one of the most important factors is providing a good seal around the frame of the window. All to often I've seen windows installed and not providing a thermal seal on the frame perimeter allowing for drafts. I replaced all the windows in our house 15 years ago and am still happy with the vinyl windows we used. I'd suggest a reputable mfg and a certified installer. Just my 2 cents.
