    backyard improvements

Hi all I got an email from one of the hosts of this site asking what I've been up to. Well here it is!!! I started with the original shot of the house I took in 2006. I'm a craigslist free junkie. Most of the material used to build this is from a barn tear-down or several deck tear outs...

    Re-planting Bamboo

Hi I put in bamboo as a privacy screen. I did a lot of prep to contain it and the bamboo has behaved for the most part. I have a retaining wall behind it and bought a heavy plastic barrier from a bamboo website. Pricey but worth it. If you do your prep you'll be happy with it IMHO

Staining cinderblock sides of raised concrete slab patio

Hi the quikwall is from home depot. It is designed to adhere directly on block. It's made to be the only support for wall, you just drystack the block and apply this over the top. But it will work for you, there are fibers in it which some stick out when you're done but they wear off after a...

    Plastic End "Caps" for 2x4s?

Hi How about just folding some thick plastic around the bottoms and tacking it in place. What comes to mind is old milk crates.

    Block foundation holes

Hi If you just make holes for duct work I wouldn't think it would be a problem. The advice I would give is not to cut any joists or the sill plate. The wood will spread out the load. I am an amateur so if an expert says I'm wrong I probably am. Just my 2 cents and experience. good luck

    how do I stagger blocks?

Hi I am building a block storage area under where I am putting deck. My question is how do I stagger the blocks at a T-point where one wall buts into another at a right angle? This is a drawing of an overhead view. I will be backfilling behind the wall using drainage so I want a strong joint...

Staining cinderblock sides of raised concrete slab patio

Hi I am just an amateur( so take my advice with a grain) but I feel if you just stain the block you will still see the grid pattern of the blocks. I put up a retaining wall and slapped a product called quikwall on it. I put in a stain that also came from HD. I think mine came out nice, so it...

    Need advice on flooding backyard

Hi again If you have the same clay soil that I have the dry well would not very well. I'd try at least talking to the neighbors and see if they are interested in doing a ditch project. With that hill and the way rain sheets off our clay a ditch or culvert is still the best option I see.

    Need advice on flooding backyard

Hi I am in Nashville how about you. My advice is to follow the stream and find what it drains into. Then check the elevation difference between your yard and drain. You will probably need to talk to your neighbors(they probably don't like it anymore than you do) and retrench to get any kind of...

    I need some other opinions...

Have you considered putting the master bath closer to where the original baths are? You would should be able to lower your costs for plumbing unless you have a vent stack running up from the first floor bath or kitchen where the new master bath is going.

    I need some other opinions...

Hi I was under the impression that you need a built in closet to call a room a bedroom for resale. Not how sure about that but something you may want to check on while in planning stage. Good luck

    Reclaimed Lumber

Hi I wish you were closer I had a ton of wood left over from a barn I helped tear down. My friend and I found an ad on craigslist for a barn tear down and took it down. It made for a long summer!!! You might try asking around at the small town co-ops for info. Good luck

    Bush Removal Costs

I myself would just wrap a chain around the base and pull them out. If you get the ground really wet the bushes will pull out fairly easily. Try asking a neighbor or friend with a truck and it would cost you a case of beer and some food. Long live the barter system!!!!!!!
