Contractor suggests laying hot asphalt over existing asphalt

A small 8' wide x 20' long area on the bottom of my driveway has large ruts on both sides that fill with water and get worst every year. The asphalt in the ruts is getting thin, and I'm looking to have it fixed. A contractor came and gave me an estimate to fill in the ruts level to the center...

High Efficiency Furnace kicks on but shuts off

I have an AMANA high efficiency gas furnace that lights and kicks on for a few seconds, then shuts off and repeats lighting again. I believe it's a problem with the intake pipe that is becoming filled with water, and flooding something. When The intake and exhaust pvc pipes come out the top of...

Too many elbows in furnace pipe a bad thing?

I have (2) 2" PVC pipes that are what I'm guessing are intake and exhaust for the furnace, both venting out a basement window. Due to some piping issues I need to slightly re-route these two pipes which will now have 3 or 4 elbows. Is this bad for the furnace and maybe not pass code in some...

    Getting shocked through the wall!

Actually, it was wet drywall mud contacting a hot on one of the outlets on the opposite side of the room. Current passed right through the metal strip on my corner tape. I cleaned off the outlet and no more problem. Lesson learned.. Thanks

    Getting shocked through the wall!

I just finished wiring some ceiling light boxes and covering everything with drywall. While applying metal corner tape to the drywall I get zapped right near the area where the boxes were installed. I did everything right, and used a junction box properly grounded. The only thing I can think...

Raising frost line with retaining wall?

Hi everyone. I'm wondering if I have the option of raising my frost line underneath my footers by building a retaining wall and bringing up the soil a 6-12 inches. It seems like it wouldn't be a problem, but I'm no soil expert and I want to make sure I do this right. My bottom sill plate for the...

    Garage is sinking!

Thanks for all the helpful advice everyone. The snow has melted, and I have begun excavation for my footers in each corner. My plan is to install 7 footers first, with the floor holding up the garage while I install these. Next, once the footers cure, I will break out the garage floor so the...

    Garage is sinking!

Hello all, new to the forum. When my garage was built, the amateurs poured a slab of concrete over some crushed stone with no footers or even rebar, just a slab of concrete. They built my 2 car garage on it. Well, now the slab has cracked down the middle and is sinking on both sides. The only...

    Window flashing installation

Hi all, new to the forums here. I just bought my first house and plan to do some improvements to it. One of the things the inspector pointed out is that there was no window flashing installed when the new siding was put on so the water is basically draining into my house. How hard is it to...
