Pergola advice, Attached or Free Standing

I'm in the same boat, and I was leaning toward free standing (maybe something like this? http://srpshelter.com/products/custom-pergola-4). I want something sturdy that can stand a bit away from my house. Any thoughts on or experience with free standing?

How to buy a “Fixer Up” House to be a Home.

It does look great! I agree, people don't use recycled materials often enough. It can really take down the price of a project, even if you end up hiring a couple friends to help with the project. Very impressive.

What type of stain should we use on deck?

Do you have suggestions on brands or what type you prefer? I've been wondering the same thing as vikasintl. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

    deck cleaning

I usually use a vinegar/water or vinegar/water/baking soda solution and let it sit for a half hour to an hour or so, and then scrub it off. That usually works for me. If that doesn't work, then I would say go ahead and sand the area and treat it again.

    Artificial or Real Landscaping

In most cases, I would definitely say go with natural, but in the case of California + droughts, I have to go with Chris on this one. The cost of upkeep and the issues with high temperatures and little rain make it not worth it to go with the real stuff.

    Deteriorating bedroom deck

That's a great idea. It could end up being a hefty investment if you rebuilt the whole deck. If you refinished/rebuilt the posts/rails, it would be a much smaller investment but would still retain the look. I think that would be your best best aesthetically and in keeping your budget down.
