    thanks guys a bunch for the info! that's the stuff i came here for! before i found this website, i found an article out there about R values and windows. All I knew was, the higher the R value, the better the window it is at sealing the bad stuff out. Can't say i've heard of U value though...

    I Agree, another good brand supposedly is Pella. never had experience with them but the mom seems to like them. what do you think about windows with that Argon gas filled, are they any good? -Mike-

    hey glenn, thanks for the info. even if we had a power failure in the house, our thermostat is battery operated so it stays on until the batteries run dead. I'd imagine too you would want to run a dehumidifier to prevent excess moisture from building up right? -Mike-

    the siding and the vent and HVAC were done by contractors who did very nice work. top dollar but you get what you pay for. the rest was done ourselves. thanks for compliments on the bay windows! the windows are Andersons, age unknown but they seem to be holding up nicely. -Mike-
