Insulation on the pipe? Does the pipe run in the wall, and if so is there insulation in the wall where the pipe runs? You could always keep the water running at times when you're afraid it will freeze.

No I don't, all the cuts are going to the corner of a wall. I also realized that adding a piece of hardieboard to the side wall was the best solution and a great idea so I was going to do that as well.

That is a possibility but it would put the backer board past the door jamb. I started trimming the curb back already so I'll have to save that idea for the future if I'm ever crazy enough to do a shower again.
