    Your house is how old?

The assessor site puts my house at 1913. I bought it in foreclosure in 2007 and have spent most of my free time since then working on it. It's a California bungalow (that's what I was told, I'm in the midwest) with a great covered front porch, beautiful maple floors, lots of windows and 9 foot...

    Doorknob latch part...purpose?

Thanks guys, it seems so obvious now. I also understand now how an improper installation can negate that feature. Actually I'm thinking most big-box pre-hung doors, with the pre-cut hinge plate, probably get installed in a way that lets that part extend. What's it called? Latch lock?

    Doorknob latch part...purpose?

This seems like something I should have figured out by now. The smaller bar that is attached to the latch bolt and moves independently of it, on a door knob latch...what does it do? I've been googling for awhile and can't even find out what it's called, let alone it's purpose. I don't have an...

    Wiring my garage

Even if you're not doing the sub panel now just spring for the 3-wire cable and cap off the third wire on each end. Then it's there for the future. Code here called for 2 grounding rods for the sub panel when I wired my garage. At least that's what my electrician told me to do, I'm not...

    Tile Shower Leaking

I wouldn't assume there is a pan underneath. If the downstairs ceiling is already damaged, that might be the place to cut a hole and see what you can see. Possibilities include the seal around the drain cup and the plumbing connections in the wall. Is there an access panel for the shower faucet...

What is the best overall drill to fix my home?

If you haven't chosen yet I would highly recommend Bosch. I've been using them for 12 years in home repair and they get moderate to heavy use. I use the 18 volt series and they've handled everything I've asked. I have the corded Bosch hammer drill and it's still going strong after almost 10...

    Rolled ridge venting

Thanks for the info oldog. I'll try to look into those tomorrow. Hoping to finish this up on Thursday so depending on availability I may be going with the rolled. Thanks for the welcome too. Signed up a year ago and just got around to posting.

    Rolled ridge venting

Hi Any opinions on the plastic rolled ridge venting that is sold in your typical Menards/HD type stores? It just seems chintzy to me and I've been on a few roofs were it appeared to be very clogged with leaves and other debris. If I use it should I tack down some metal screen to double-check the...
