    Yes you are correct, it's been years, so I'm a rookie too. :) I was just trying to offer a way that didn't require too much effort or intensive labor costs. I figure a full rafter would involve a lot of extra effort to run another 2x6x16 full length, down the side of the cracked/split one...

    You may have to peel back a course of the siding to peak in and see how the structure is supported. (Where the studs are located , how they are configured etc...) I've worked with vinyl siding mostly... And that's pretty easy to unzip by lifting the bottom section of a course of siding OUT of...

    Like with anything else. Use common sense and READ the fine print in any insurance policy. (Never just take the 'word' of an agent over the phone)... I've done many DIY projects over the years, including being licensed to do what my state called 'miscellaneous repairs' for others...

    Damaged rafter?

    Perhaps a 2x6x12 would do the trick. (Maybe even a 2x6x10?)... Lay it along side the existing rafter and screw it to the existing rafter. Staggering the screws apx. 12-16 inches apart. It will be like a 'splice' to re-enforce the cracked 2x6x16 rafter. Like this below:

    You will probably have to locate the support studs and then mount your rails to those.

    Once the mantle piece is installed, I bet you will figure out a simple trimming solution. Would love to see a pic of the finished project. :)
