The screws are about 2" long wood screws, typical to a TV mounting kit. The building super is out of town so I think I'm going to have to talk to him about this.

It's mostly smooth. There are several patch jobs and about a half inch of paint from multiple repaints. The stud finder I have is one of the cheaper ones.
Aren't studs 2x4s?
These walls are 2.5" thick, fairly dense. No hollow sounds when I tap on them to find the studs.
