    Installing insulation to existing wall

I live in a condo with an especially noisy neighbor. We share a wall that happens to be my bedroom and ever since she moved in, I've lost tons of sleep due to slamming doors, in fact I can even hear when she closes a dresser drawer. I'd like to add insulation to the wall without having to...

    Casement sash replacement

I have to replace one sash in two different casement windows. I was trying to make some adjustments to one of them when I disassembled it a bit too much and the sash fell out and the glass cracked. The other sash just developed a crack all by itself. The one that hit the ground had bent...

    Leaking boiler pipe

I,ll start by saying I know nothing about boilers. A friend of mine showed me this leak coming from her boiler.

Pretty sure it's not oak or pine. Any guesses?

Fridge and freezer chest in same outlet?

I was asked this question today but had no idea. I'll have to check the panel to see if it's 15 or 20 amps. I know sometimes fridges have a dedicated circuit. This will be in the garage.

A real head scratcher - no power to entire bathroom

the other day I was adding a GFCI outlet to a friend's bathroom. There is a fan switch on the opposite side of the wall so I decided to tap into it's power. I installed an old work box with the ears, screwed in the GFCI outlet, ran the wires using Romex into the fan switch box. I connected all...

    UV light location

A friend of mine has had her furnace "beeping" every couple minutes for the last year and she thinks it's due to a burned out UV light. I looked where the blower is located and saw nothing. I took a pic of the burner section of the furnace and got this pic, could this be it?

    Venting for furnace room

A friend of mine wants to have some sort of long venting to the right of the door where the drywall is missing but I thought the air flow under the door along with the open space within the furnace room would allow for plenty of airflow. She plans on keeping the door closed but is concerned...

What's going on with this lintel?

The right side of the garage has the lintel going the full distance but I can't tell what's going on with the left side. As you can see it's causing the bricks and mortar to crack. There is no cracking on the right side. I'm sure it didn't always look like that but I don't know what piece is...

    Subfloor suggestions for this room

this space is going to be an exercise room so there is going to be a lot of extra weight on it. I'm going to frame the inside of the hole and lay down plywood or OSB. There are a couple issues. First, the border around the hole is slightly raised, about 1/4" or slightly less which shouldn't be...

Ceramic/porcelain drill bits in drill vs hammer drill

I was attempting to install a tp holder today thru a ceramic tile and it took FOREVER. I used a brand new bit but it was with a 20v cordless drill. The package said it was for a hammer drill. Does it really make that much difference? I probably just answered my own question lol I was a little...

Best cementitious product to fill in this hole?

This picture is of a screened in porch. About half the hole is covered by 5x1 trim. Since it's such a small repair, the owner has decided to just fill in and level with thinset or something. There's self-leveling compound, grout, thinset, which might work best? It won't get any foot traffic.

Tips or tricks on how to close this mitered edge

I'm trying to miter an old piece of trim to new but the old trim has deteriorated a bit. It's so large that I don't think saw dust and glue will work. You can't tell from the pic but the trim pieces are contacting one another at the top.

Two questions about this pic - mortar and spigot

I need to patch a few holes in the mortar from wasps so i won't need more than a cups worth. Can i buy it in small quantities? The spigot handle broke off but i've come across another handle for that type of spigot. This might be a dumb question but if I want to remove the broken handle I'll...

    Kitchen aid disposal grinder replacement

I have two issues with this disposal. At the bottom of the disposal are two metal parts that grind the contents - one of mine broke. Without dismantling it I can't tell if it's repairable. The other problem is due to it being unbalanced, it vibrates and shakes and leaks at the bottom of the...

    Skylight trim?

Any suggestions on the best material to use to trim this skylight? Whichever material I use, it can only be attached at the bottom of the insulation; there's no structure at the top to attach anything.
