    wood cutting

You were the unfortunate recipient of a dishonest man's screw job. 2x4 studs cost less than $2 each. Why anybody would jack with them, and cut them, then return them as if they were simply excess, is beyond me. What is wrong with people?!?!?! Beyond that, accurate cutting requires decent...

    Help with finishing my basement

Joe is right about the costs and problems. Too much money for too little bang. For instance, the amount of self-leveling concrete you need will probably be 3-4 times what you think you need (maybe more), and the stuff is expensive! Also, you will run into countless problems (as well as...

There should definitely be sheeting underneath it.

    Ballpark remodeling costs?

Sounds like you could be getting in to a good deal. I assume you're aware of closing costs, etc. It's good to hear that you can do some of this work yourself. Honestly, a person who cannot do any DIY work on a house should never buy a fixer-upper. You're just going to run into too much...

    Ballpark remodeling costs?

The answers to your questions depend largely on whether you're doing the work yourself, or having it done. I've done a lot of DIY shingling over the years. It's not terribly complicated, but you do have to know what you're doing, as well as local codes. And while it is very "job well done"...

What would you do with this driveway?

Does your city have any goofy codes or ordinances that specify how much of your lot you can have paved? We did where I lived in Minnesota.

Is this a lousy granite installation?

Holy cow, that's really bad! I can see some variance on the ends. But white caulk to fill the gap? Mostly though, that sink doesn't even look like it belongs there. Good luck!

Can I remove a post made of 1X4s?

I'm confused. If it's not tied into the floor or ceiling, where is it? What IS it tied into. And, like Tangelo said, it'd be great to have a picture or two. Thanks!

    milwaukee cordless

I've had good luck with all my DeWALT tools. On the other hand, a plumber friend of mine will use nothing but Ryobi cordless VSR drills. He beats the heck out of the things every day. They stand up pretty well, and when they're shot they're not too expensive to replace. Go figure.

    Name this weed

Kind of looks like Creeping Charlie. You'll need to use 2-4d to kill it. Most fertilizer companies will have some fertilizer with 2-4d added. Just look for it. On the other hand, I've had far more success with a sprayer.

What would you do with this driveway?

If the garage in the house is going to be used as a garage, you'll want a driveway there. If it's going to be used for living space, add a patio and a sidewalk to the driveway that leads to the free-standing garage.

    New Patio and Tree Roots

Cut the root. Losing a 1-1/2 inch root is not going to kill a tree that size. If you don't want to do that, I'd suggest re-sizing your patio. Good luck!

    Craftsman Weed Wacker not running

You probably need a good carb cleaning far more than you need to adjust the high or low screws. Most likely, some tiny pieces of some junk got into the carb.

Cost of totally replace kitchen and 2 bathrooms

If you're wanting to go turn-key, and have everything done for you, $25,000 won't even begin to cover the remodel on a kitchen and two bathrooms. If you're doing all the work yourself, $25,000 should more than cover it. But, as JoeCaptain asked, the real question is whether or not you've...

    Do it or forget it?

My son & his wife bought a house like yours - in Nordeast - about a year ago. Big time fixer-upper. One of the problems they faced is just knowing where to start. Based on what you've pointed out for possible projects, at this point I'd suggest the following: 1. Replace your counter-top &...

Why are there chains in my attic?

There is no way they are supporting anything. They're too light, are slack, and are all hanging at different angles. I'd say they're one of two things. Either they are marking something under the insulation (have you checked to see what they're attached to at the bottom?), or the previous...

    Wood Siding replacement, DIY Questions

The price, thickness, and quality of this vertical siding varies greatly. Be sure to do your research. Frankly, I'm not a fan of it. But if you're going to do it, what InspectorD said is spot on. Make sure you do a really good job of sealing it. Good luck!

Replacing 1/2 hp with 1/3hp sump pump

You need to do some serious examination of your gutters and downspouts. Something is definitely wrong with this picture. If it was running like that all the time, it's probably because the house is near a spring, or some such thing. But rain causing it to run constantly is almost...
