Hip roof -- Ridge vent or fan?

Since the chimney (which the antenna is attached to) is just out of picture and basically in the center of the roof the cables must traverse the roof. The path they take now is nearly the shortest distance and decidedly most visually discrete since it is the rear slope of the roof. Was hoping...

Hip roof -- Ridge vent or fan?

Yeah, I nearly tripled the eve venting when installing the soffits/siding. My local ELCO and county are providing incentives which gives nearly 60% back on product cost. I only have about 1,200 sq/ft. and the OC R30 unfaced that I figured I'd use is $559 a pallet. Two would do so I just have...

Hip roof -- Ridge vent or fan?

I hear ya! Was just figuring there must be some sort of mitigation to the possible weakening. Maybe gusseting or simply intermittent perforation of the sheathing. >>> A short article about hip venting. .

Hip roof -- Ridge vent or fan?

Appreciate the replies! I really didn't state previously so, just wanted to note -- Although I've done most of my own home improvements (windows, doors, siding, etc.) the roof is a job I prefer to sub for convenience. As mentioned earlier one roofer did make a passing mention of ridge...

Hip roof -- Ridge vent or fan?

Thanks for the reply nealtw! Absolutely -- Ridge vent and no fan or vice-versa, no tug-o-war. One-way passive in conjunction with a fan is an option I didn't consider. Thanks for adding another bolt to the quiver! No, no venting on the lower roof aside from soffit and a single gable louver...

Hip roof -- Ridge vent or fan?

I'm getting differing professional opinions about venting my hip roof and would like to solicit yours. Some say ridge vent only, others say no ridge vent while keeping the vent fan. Only one has suggested ridge and hip venting (with no fan). The ridge apex is a scant 3' long so based on ridge...

Current state of IKO shingle quality?

Oops, just want to correct my last post. The guarantee transfers I mentioned are instead manufacturer product warranties. I was told transfer of these are free of charge by GAF and Certainteed while IKO charges a $100 fee. Also, my current contractor of choice is additionally an IKO certified...

Current state of IKO shingle quality?

Thanks for the heads-up! Depending on the price it could be a worthy investment. This roofer offers free guarantee transfers for GAF and Certainteed ($100 for IKO) and since I don't expect to be here but for a handful of years longer it could be a selling point.

Current state of IKO shingle quality?

Absolutely -- That's yet another consideration and based on much research I think I've narrowed it down to a competent roofer who stands behind their labor. Not sure though if being listed as a "Manufacturer Certified Installer" implies there should be no question regarding warranty in the...

Current state of IKO shingle quality?

Much appreciate the replies! Argh! Not what I was hoping to read. In addition to what's been stated I guess another consideration is warranty. From what I understand IKO's shingle warranty period is equal to that of other major manufacturers but seems it's not as liberal and actually requires...

Current state of IKO shingle quality?

Like all manufacturers products IKO had a bit of bad press a few years ago but all seems to be quite quiet on that front since then. From what I can tell IKO shingles have been used extensively since then on new construction and re-roofs with no recent product related complaints. So, I'm...

How do I repair lifting at corner beads?

Appreciate the hint! I've not yet had to install a corner bead with any of my projects but it's good insight in allowing the bead to lay a strain-less 90° when being affixed. I can also envision how a sheet's rounded factory edge could induce the novice installer to inadvertently suck the...

How do I repair lifting at corner beads?

Much appreciate the reply and link! Yes, metal beads all around. It's looking like the offending corners are needing to be chipped back 1/2"-1" before finding adhesion. One thing I'm finding really odd is a few of the "beads" are recessed. By this I mean if you were to place a straight-edge...

How do I repair lifting at corner beads?

Curious as to what is the recommended way to repair drywall outside corners where, due simply to age, the joint compound has lost adhesion to the corner bead producing a hairline crack that is ever so slightly lifting. Noticing this on almost all beaded corners in this 50 year old home. I'm...

    Plumbing dispute - Advice needed

I had a somewhat similar contract situation as yours. Diplomacy on my part worked for the best. I came to the understanding there was actually no real "legal" recourse therefore had to appeal to their sense of customer satisfaction. After reminding them they estimated a minimum of 3 days work...

Do elbows introduce noise (copper water pipe)?

Appreciate the replies! Sorry, not able to take pics nor can I draw on the computer I'm currently using. Simply envision the following diagram. ______,,,,_____ vs. ____/͞ ͞ ͞ ''''''͞ ͞ ͞ \_____ (No, not a diode schematic, :p) Yeah, I should have pexed...

Do elbows introduce noise (copper water pipe)?

Much appreciate the reply..and, for flicking on my common sense! Surprised I hadn't run across that option. But, since it looks to be a plumbers supply specialty item I see now why my HD and Lowes perusing didn't avail me of this option. :o Anyhow you got me inspired in that I can get the...

Do elbows introduce noise (copper water pipe)?

I currently have a gate valve for the home water supply master shut-off and looking to replace it with a ball valve. Unfortunately the gate valve is sandwiched snug to/between the wall and a drain pipe. I am thinking to cut a 1' or so section and add 45's (or 90's) to bring it out a few inches...

Req opinions on professionally completed drain repair.

Much appreciate the replies! @nealtw & CallMeVilla I rarely contract anyone to do work for me (stereotypical Jack-of-all-trades) but in this case travel requirements dictated. Your insight should prove useful if I ever need to do so in the future. In the meanwhile I'll try a little diplomacy...
