Hip roof -- Ridge vent or fan?

I'm getting differing professional opinions about venting my hip roof and would like to solicit yours. Some say ridge vent only, others say no ridge vent while keeping the vent fan. Only one has suggested ridge and hip venting (with no fan). The ridge apex is a scant 3' long so based on ridge...

Current state of IKO shingle quality?

Like all manufacturers products IKO had a bit of bad press a few years ago but all seems to be quite quiet on that front since then. From what I can tell IKO shingles have been used extensively since then on new construction and re-roofs with no recent product related complaints. So, I'm...

How do I repair lifting at corner beads?

Curious as to what is the recommended way to repair drywall outside corners where, due simply to age, the joint compound has lost adhesion to the corner bead producing a hairline crack that is ever so slightly lifting. Noticing this on almost all beaded corners in this 50 year old home. I'm...

Do elbows introduce noise (copper water pipe)?

I currently have a gate valve for the home water supply master shut-off and looking to replace it with a ball valve. Unfortunately the gate valve is sandwiched snug to/between the wall and a drain pipe. I am thinking to cut a 1' or so section and add 45's (or 90's) to bring it out a few inches...

Req opinions on professionally completed drain repair.

Just had a portion of a corroded and split cast iron drain pipe replaced with PVC. Was wondering what your opinion is regarding their choice of repair method. As can be seen in the attached diagram the split (designated in red) was in a service sweep of the kitchen drain. They chose to cut the...

2 queations about siding job -- Fiberboard Sheathing & CertaWrap

Also posted to another forum... Tackling another neighbors vinyl siding job and we see the sub is 1/2" fiberboard underneath Masonite siding. Research makes fiberboard seem like a good sheathing material in that it has (to some extent) both sound deadening and insulation properties. What I'm...

Moving elec drop to replace siding. Any cautions?

I'm preparing to install vinyl siding and soffits which will require me to temporarily move the electrical drop. I'd like to know what is considered safe practices for this operation? I have an extra wedge clamp and there looks to be enough room to attach it to the messenger aft of the one...

    Drywall joint...tape or no tape?

In the attached pic you can see a 4" horizontal drywall joint. Am I correct in assuming this should be taped to eliminate cracking (again)? Also, is it safe to use #90 joint compound to first-coat on the corner repairs? Cheers!

    Baseboard, Window & Door Trim...Monochromatic a must?

I'm preparing to paint my home's interior keeping within a family of browns, mostly varying light shades of tan. As I recently installed white vinyl replacement windows I was intending to paint "all" interior trim with satin/semi-gloss white. That said, I've recently begun thinking I'd like to...

Repositioning bricks to close gaps in veneer?

The corner of my home had a 1 1/2" sag of the foundation in one corner. Just under a year ago I had a contractor come out and install 7 helical piers. This actually succeeded in raising that corner of the slab foundation to nearly level prior to yield. Unfortunately the gap in the brick veneer...

Chimney bricks spalling. Req opinions on short & long term repairs.

I've posted this to another forum but additional input is always appreciated. Have an unused chimney here that is in need of some short-term and long-term TLC. Looks like it has for some time been poorly capped in addition to the flashings caulking not being maintained. As can be seen the...
