Help finding weatherstripping for exterior wood door

Hi Jeff, I usually make my own by cutting an 1/8" by 7/16" groove in 5/8 to 3/4" material. Here are a couple of options: I just found this one online. Have not used it. http://www.lowes.com/pd_104805-81-87981_4294774692__?productId=3200767&Ns=p_product_...

    Schlage lock core question

If you can put one key into the lock for the other door you can have the second lock rekeyed to match your first key....Should not have to replace core. Just take the lock that you want to change along with keys to both locks to a local locksmith. They should be able to do that service for you...

    Front door threshold raise?

Hi folks, Perhaps a door shoe or sweep is missing on the bottom of the door. That would take up about 1/2". All good questions an comments here...Where is Garlandkr?! RC/DG

Old wooden doors - how well insulated?

Hi Old/New, Thanks for that input... Definitely not trying to sell anything, just want to help and learn stuff myself!! RC/DG

Old wooden doors - how well insulated?

Personally, I like old stuff... If your door fits the look of your house I would be inclined to tune it up and add weatherstripping and a door shoe. The weatherstripping that screws to the jamb and has a bulb in it to create the seal is more effective than the stick on foam tape products...

    Door casing/trim issue???

Glad that it worked out.... By the time you are done with the remodel you will be advising others! RC/DG

    Door casing/trim issue???

Perhaps you mean that the door jamb on your new prehung door is not wide enough to reach the face of wall? Older plaster walls are thicker than the drywall construction that we use today. If that is what you mean you could rip some clear pine strips 3/8"x 3/4" or so to make the door jamb...

    Exterior door stile splitting.

Hi there, You could try pulling the door together with a pipe clamp. When you have it tightened up as far as it will go put some long screws in from the edge of the door to connect the stile to the bottom rail. You can usually find up to about 5" screws in the specialty screw department at...

Opinions on a closet door solution

Hi J, I am sorry that your cool Johnson hardware solution won't work in your situation. I would think that your option 1 would work ok. Seems like they would look the same when closed and when they are open, what the heck, you're doing laundry! Probably a good phone in question for the...

wanting to replace rotten sashes in double hung windows

Hi Tall, Finding the manufacturer might be a bit tough but certainly would be the best way to get replacement sashes. Couple of things to check out: 1. Look closely at the hardware...Cranks or double hung window latches might have a name on them. 2. Look for the tempered glass "bug"...

Window has receded. Drywall no longer is even with it.

A few ways that I have approached this common situation: 1. Add a thin strip of wood around the opening as a jamb extension. Install casing as usual. Caulk between wall and casing if you have to shim casing out to make miters work. 2. Put a pencil mark on the wall around the outside of...

    Lock Installation

Was your entry lock a lever model? I think most if not all keyed levers have the key way in the horizontal position. I have never had a problem with this situation... Just takes a little getting used to. RC/DG

    Replacement windows are new construction!

It sounds like you are thinking about reducing the integrity of your windows... Without knowing lots of details about your situation I can't give you really good advice but I think you are going to have leaks at the very least and windows that probably won't be firmly attached. Since you...

How much door warp is acceptable? What can be done?

Thanks for the interesting caliper tidbit, Mr.Parker!! I would not have figured that one out! RC/DG

How much door warp is acceptable? What can be done?

Well, it is always better if the door warps the other way because you can pull it in a bit with the latch and maybe keep it from getting worse. There really isn't a way of knowing if your door warp will get worse or, for that matter, better over time. That being said, the Qlon kerf weatherstrip...

How much door warp is acceptable? What can be done?

Hi there, As you found out, most manufacturers state that 1/4" is within tolerances and is not considered a defect. If you push hard enough and become enough of an irritant you might get a new door out of the deal. Installation of the new door is another matter. Getting any money at all for...

Installing an interior door PLUMB on a frame that lacks one

Hi there, You can tell a lot about a door frame by checking it in all directions with a long level. If you don't have a long level, you can use a short level held against a straight board cut to 6'7" or so. Put it against the inside of the opening and also on the edge of the opening facing out...
