    Wood on concrete

Good morning, Dick! I found my article -- it was published on PCI: Paint & Coatings Industry Magazine on September 2004, titled "Acrylic Latex Paints: Still the Gold Standard for Exterior Performance." The quote is: "The limitations of vinyl acrylic binders in this regard have been...

    Wood on concrete

Dick -- I can cite sources that should prove my point about the acidity, particularly in new concrete that is still curing. I have them at my office, and will follow up on Monday, instead of researching this all over again. Concrete is not as porous as wood, definitely not. But it will wick...

    Wood on concrete

Glue and other adhesives are rarely a good idea for concrete for many reasons: 1. Concrete will expand and contract with moisture and temperature. If the adhesives cannot "flex" along with it, then they will eventually be worked loose. 2. Concrete has a high acidity level when new and...

    Clogged Kitchen Sink

So... when they said ""THRIFT's non-acid formula will not harm fine fixtures, porcelain, chrome trim, polished brass, plastic or metal pipes"... they were lying outright?

    Clogged Kitchen Sink

Redwood -- I was thinking of the non-acid drain cleaner found here. At least in the marketing copy, it reads: "THRIFT's non-acid formula will not harm fine fixtures, porcelain, chrome trim, polished brass, plastic or metal pipes."

Why is my house so Hot!?!

Forgive me if I'm making a fool out of myself... BUT. Ventilation AND Insulation? If you have an insulated box that's ventilated, it would no longer have value as an insulated box. How is this different with a house? ----- Gale Concrete Treat: Concrete Sealer

    bad concrete on pool decking

25 degrees, hm? I'm going to assume you mean Fahrenheit. ;-) What you see there is concrete "spalling" -- and an incredibly bad case of it, at that. It happens like this: When your concrete slab was poured, the contractor probably "creamed" the surface to give it a professional...

    Basement floor drain question

Although it's usually against code, some people will drain their sump pumps to septic/sewer lines. That may be the case here. It's functional, but you're sending all that groundwater to the town to process as sewage. And yes -- running the dehumidifier to the drain should work fine.

    Clogged Kitchen Sink

I recently bought this product known as "Thrift" on eBay that is incredible. I'd poured at least $30 in drain cleaners down the thing without any improvement at all, and this went on until it had almost stopped draining completely. The stuff fixed the problem in 2 minutes. Again, as far as...

    Installing sump pump

The answer may be as simple as installing a second some pump in each of the areas. Even with very powerful sump pump systems, it's possible and likely that during extreme conditions you will need two to keep the space dry. Alternatively, you can install a second discharge line and a...

    Backup water sump pump

Water-powered sump pumps are expensive and wasteful, but since you already have one, you might as well choose it over a flooded basement. Keep it running, but get out there soon and replace that sump pump. I recommend a cast-iron Zoeller pump myself, but any system with a cast-iron core will...

Mouse Infestation - Building a Trap that Kills

That's great... but I want to keep them out of the house in the first place, too. Otherwise, it's just a neverending battle. Once their scent is in the house, it invites more.
