Hypothetical Question: Silence of the Noisy Neighbor

Seriously, you should think of moving. These folks will probably move on, or get thrown in jail, or something, but then you get a new bunch.

    redneck cattle gate

I would not call that a redneck cattle gate. I would title it an Archimedian Cattle Gate. Very ingenious use of lever arms! After all, Archimedes said he could move the world with a long enough lever arm. A true redneck cattle gate is one that is opened by the force of your beat up pickup...

    Repairing water damaged ceiling

This all depends on how much water damage there is. Start by using a straight edge and scoring on each side of the tape. Then remove the tape with a putty knife. If what is underneath is still OK and not all crumbly, you can apply another coat of mud and imbed new tape. Then overcoat and finish...

    Dewalt battery charger

Well, if you cook your old ni-cad batteries and then switch to the new lithium's you will be glad they died - the new lithiums are 5000% better. Last longer with more power and charge faster. If I were you I would just keep using what you have while you can. When they all fail, switch to lithium...

How do I repair lifting at corner beads?

If your corner is recessed, you might be able to go over the top with another bead. If after the new bead is fastened you can pass a 10" wide taping knife with one edge over the corner of the bead and the other edge over your wall and not touch any screws or metal of your corner bead, then you...

How do I repair lifting at corner beads?

I am assuming this is a metal corner bead, as these were used mostly in years past (and still a great corner bead too). If so, simply chip off any loose material and skim over the top. All-purpose USG mud works fine but it shrinks in. So recoat a few times after the shrinkage. Knock off any...

    Cracking ceiling and wall

Wow, those sure are not the typical drywall cracks I have ever seen. Almost looks more like a rupture due to very high sudden stress. For sure you will want to find what caused these before you repair this or you might have exactly the same thing happen again.

How should I proceed with this plaster ceiling?

I am seeing drywall, not plaster. You do not necessarily have to rip everything out - you can do a butt joint of the new drywall onto the old - see http://www.drywallinfo.com/butt_joints.html Around the existing fan you may need to remove drywall in order to repair and/or gain needed access for...

Is my drill battery charger ruined?

If it for a ni-cad battery, don't feel too bad if it is wrecked. If you have to get a new charger and drill with the newer lithium battery, you will be thankful that this one got ruined. The new lithium batteries are miles better.

First Homeowner Project Ever: Changing Ceiling Texture

I don't think you can remove popcorn by wetting and scraping if it has been painted. At any rate, I would go with smooth ceilings and walls any day - repairing, cleaning, and painting a smooth surface is so much easier. You can get a good enough finish if you are patient and persistent enough...

    Long distance landline phone services?

Not sure about your cell phone, but I know for an old cell phone I had it was possible to set up an antenna on your rooftop and then connect the phone to the antenna. I would think one could now even boost reception with a wireless setup. 10 cents per minute in this day is pretty crazy - they do...

    Small budget bathroom ideas

Ask around about vanities - I have found that I could not even give my old one away and it was still in good shape. Contact some contractors.

    How to finish plywood walls

I would attach drywall and finish. Since you have no idea what wiring is behind and where, use drywall screws of length to not pass through the other side of the plywood. Or fasten drywall to areas where you know there is a stud underneath.

Why is my drywall ceiling cracking away from walls?

Yes, you are right. There is a limit to what any kind of tape or bead can handle.

Why is my drywall ceiling cracking away from walls?

I assume this was taped right? A special crack-repair tape might hold up. See http://www.drywallinfo.com/drywall-news/strait-flex-crack-repair-tape/

How To Remove Fake Wood Paneling?

Another option is to tape and finish the paneling. I just did this last summer in our basement family room. You need to make sure all edges are level with each other and then tape all seams and corners as if this was drywall. Also, I filled all the grooves in the paneling by applying compound...

Plan of action for repairing broken concrete steps.

My own preference is to replace any failing concrete with a non-concrete alternative if possible. Cracked concrete is just bad news! For example, I replaced our cracked up walk with two rows of pavers - no more cracks and any adjustments/repairs take minutes, not days, and cost dollars not...

Pressure treated does not mean ground contact

Typical green treated will rot if it sits on the ground. I always prop mine up on 2" cement pads. The ones I replaced were completely rotted where they were on the ground. The stuff you are mentioning here is different however, and I am sure costs a bit more.

    Advice on Porch Posts

In the photo below is shown our back porch, supported by piers spaced 10 ft apart. The porch is constructed of 2x6's running the long way, spaced 16" apart, sitting upon 6x6 beams. The back of the porch is attached to the foundation of the home. The previous owners had 2x4's running down in...
