What wood stain should I use?

I think your room would look great with an "ebony" wood stain. http://www.houzz.com/photos/2731169/Cedar-Street-contemporary-family-room-dc-metro

AC won't cool below 78; service guy keeps saying nothing is wrong

It is better than before they came out the first time but not better than this time last summer, if that makes sense. So when they came out the first time, it was not working at all. Now it is cooling but not below 78 degrees. We did not have problems getting it below 78 before it completely...

AC won't cool below 78; service guy keeps saying nothing is wrong

I can assure you this guy in no way got "stiffed." He works for a relatively large company and is not a one-man show. I talked to the company customer service people several times before scheduling the second service call and told them that I would not pay a second service charge when I had just...

    Shower curtain sizes

Assuming you haven't taken it back, it all depends on how much "fullness" you like in the curtain. For standard fullness drapes, for example, it is generally recommended to have 2x as much fabric as the window. So if your "window" were 32" across, you would want 64" of fabric to give you a nice...

Recommendations for order of home improvements

We've been doing quite a bit of similar work in our house, and I have found I prefer painting last. Yes, you sometimes have to be more careful to cover up flooring or objects, but I swear every time I have painted a room and then done something to it afterwards, I always end up touching up...

What wood stain should I use?

Do you have any pictures? Is flooring in any other part of the house a consideration (for flow)? I am a big fan of darker stains in all settings because I think it tends to compete less with other shades of wood furniture. We have a kind of amber honey colored wood floor in our kitchen/family...

Real Hardwood vs. Engineered Hardwood when real hardwood already in part of house?

Thanks for all your advice. Sounds like a lot of people are recommending engineered. We are going to talk to do some more shopping. Will let you know what we decide!

AC won't cool below 78; service guy keeps saying nothing is wrong

I have 3 HVAC units in my house-- 2 downstairs and 1 upstairs. House and units are 9 years old. We've only lived here for a year and don't spend much time at all upstairs, so it's hard to say what's "normal" for upstairs. A few weeks ago, I noticed that upstairs unit wasn't working at all...

    HUGE windows-Blessing & Curse

I like the roman shades idea, but if I were you, I would really want to show off the top of that center window. My house has quite a few arched windows, which are impossible to dress without some sort of custom plantation shutters. We did curtains that run kind of half way across. You could...

HELP!!! Why would anyone do this?!

Tear it off!! IMHO, laminate granite look is the worst, especially in a lighter than black color. I agree that there must be something underneath they tried to cover. Perhaps some cracks or chips in the granite? I'm dying to see what's under there!

What colour do I paint the exterior front door?

I think red or yellow-- something that pops would look great! My personal favorite is red. I also have a neighbor who it sounds like has similar house colors to you, and they painted their door a sort of light robin egg blue. Hard to describe but like a lighter version of the Tiffany's jewelry...

Birds eating all of my grass seed!

I am having the same problem. I think putting the seed mixed with mulch helps a lot because it kind of hides it. I have read that you can also sprinkle something the birds like to eat-- like some bird seed that won't sprout in your yard, and the birds will go for that more than the grass seed. I...

    Wood Floor Question

I don't have laminate flooring, but I do have a steam mop. I have used it on my sealed real hardwood floors, and it seems to be just fine. I agree with the previous poster that I think the steam mop probably leaves less moisture than a real mop. It leaves the surface damp but it dries pretty...

Real Hardwood vs. Engineered Hardwood when real hardwood already in part of house?

Our home is about 6,000 square feet. On the first floor, the initial 1/3 of the space, which includes the front entry, formal living room and formal dining room, is composed of beige unfilled travertine in a versailles pattern. The next 1/3, which includes the kitchen, breakfast room, and den...

To paint or not to paint.

I personally love white cabinets but agree with havasu that the problem is the all white with no contrast. I wouldn't even open that can of worms about repainting the cabinets. I know people do it all the time, but it is always going to be so much harder than you think. And painting them black...

Moving large range before kitchen backsplash replacement

We are wanting to replace the backsplash in our kitchen. We have a 48" Thermador range with its own stainless steel backsplash attached. The stainless backsplash is removable, and there is tile on the wall behind it. The tile contractor we spoke to basically wants nothing to do with the range...
