Building a deck over concrete and grass

I have a standard 10 x 10 concrete slab patio. It's settled, the concrete step has majorly sloped, and the wooden steps leading to the sun porch are about to fall apart. I want to cover it over with a nice deck that expands the total porch area of my back yard, wraps around my sun porch, and...

    Let's Talk Cordless Drills

I'm in the market for a new one. I currently use a Craftsman 18v but it's a few years old and the batteries aren't holding their charge as long as they used to. I'm also noticing that I'm losing the torque I need. I would say that I'm becoming a mid-level skilled DIY guy. My recent project is...

3-way switch not turning off light

I have a duplex switch (that I just replaced) with a 3-way on one side and a single on the other. For some reason, since the replacement the 3 way isn't turning off. Is it more likely that the Commun (hot) is on the wrong side? Looking for a good answer before I keep trying new wiring patterns.

Dual toggle switch - did I kill it?

OK, so I'm going to quickly prove that I'm not an electrician. I was told that the Leviton switch for my light / disposal was obsolete and finding a plate would be difficult, so I opted to replace it. I turned off the power, put in the toggle, then turned the power back on and flipped the...

Cost of wiring a house for TV / Net

I have a 30 year old house that was never wired for TV so my dish has cables running along the sides of my house and in through holes drilled through the house. I'm interested in finding out how much I could expect to pay to have a 2 story, 4 bedroom house wired for TV and internet. Anyone...

    Are rechargeable batteries proprietary?

The batteries for my Craftsman tools seem to be losing their power and not holding a charge. Do I need to buy new Craftsman brand batteries or is there a cheaper generic that I can use?

Tired of "showcases". Show me something real!

So as I'm working on my bathroom I've noticed something: places that sell fixtures all seemed fixed on the concept of the 200-300 square foot bathroom. Try to find any place showcasing a small half-bath idea. I can show you several bathroom showcases with a fireplace, claw-foot tub in the center...

Hardwood flooring job in Elk Grove, IL

Putting out a request for bid on a hard-wood floor install in Elk Grove Village, IL. Don't know if anyone here installs flooring, but I'm interested in finding someone local. If you do this professionally and have some local references, PM me to set up a time. I'm not looking for stores that are...

    New compression shut-off valve leaks

I just put on a new compression-fit shut-off valve and it's leaking. Is it possible I crimped the copper pipe when I took the old one off? If so, how do I fix this problem?

    This weekend I'm...

Remodeling the half-bath! I've pulled out the old sink and vanity and peeled off the wallpaper. Bought some topping compound that I'm going to apply to the walls after I spackle. Then I'm gonna prime and paint and install the new pedestal sink and toilet. Finally I'm gonna put on a new light and...

favorite / least favorite brand of tools

Which brands that you've used do you truly like or dislike? I know there are a lot of Ryobi haters out there and Black & Decker haters. I'm interested in seeing how many casual vs hard-core handymen have a strong opinion on brands.

Getting pretty sick of the Depot

I'm getting tired of Home Depot. Seems that lately, more often than not they don't have what I'm trying to find. Case in point: Lost the key to my storm-door lock, so I removed the lock and brought it there to either buy a new lock or get it re-keyed. They don't sell the locks. They don't...

Wiring my home for Cable (Dish) & Cat 5

I have a house built in 82, and there are no cable jacks anywhere. To install my DISH, they had to run ugly black wiring all around my house. (Any reason why they can't carry white cable?) I'd like to have my house wired for cable, and while they're at it put in some cat 5 wiring in a few rooms...

Removing wallpaper scraped up the drywall

I'm removing all the wallpaper in my bathroom. (It's ugly as foo.) In doing so, I've scraped up the drywall a bit. Not any deep gouges, but enough to expose the brown paper under the primed part of the drywall. When I'm finished removing the paper I plan to prime with an oil-based primer, but...

    Guardian Battery Backup for Sump

The house we're buying tomorrow just had a problem. The battery backup for the sump failed after 2.5 hours, and the basement took water after freak amounts of rain nailed our town. The sump claims that it will run continuously for 6 hours. Why would it die after 2.5?

Paslode nail framing gun vs Bostitch combo

I'm getting into a molding project and I'm picking up a nail gun. Should I go with the Paslode nail gun, or the Bostitch 3 gun combo? They're both the same price, but obviously I get more stuff with the Bostitch pack. I know the compressor sucks, but how are the guns?
