Safe way to cut an existing gas line?

finally got it somewhat finished this morning. took all of about 30 minutes, and i used that rectorseal stuff, no leaks at all. i still have a stub sticking out of the wall about 1.5", but to get the rest out would be a big pain and i just don't want to mess with it right now. i'm opening up...

Is this a ball valve? (stupid question, i know)

i need to move a gas line and just wanted to make sure since it looks different than the ones inside. i know these things don't get used very often, are there any seals or o-rings that might fall apart internally if i turn it off/on? gas scares the crap out of me, btw. :o EDIT: i guess it...

    Hobbies other than home repair.

tennis, fishing, disk golf, pool. i grew up always tinkering with cars, still have a v8 rx7 project car that will probably never get finished at the rate i'm going. i'm one of those people that could easily have 10 cars and still want more. eventually graduated to sportbikes and threw WAY too...

    Progess on my garage un-conversion

so i bought my 1st home a month ago, and the garage had been enclosed back in the 70's or so. obviously, that had to go. the total area is 19x26, and they had the front 6' made into a weird sort of storage room. the rest was a big room with 2 huge closets and the washer/dryer area all on the...

Safe way to cut an existing gas line?

i just need to cut it so i can easily unscrew a small piece of pipe where i actually have room to get to it. it's 1/2" steel pipe. easy way: cut pipe, unscrew 1 small piece of pipe, cap fitting hard way: unscrew 10 fittings with no room to work, cap fitting

Safe way to cut an existing gas line?

basically i need to eliminate a gas line in my garage, and the way it snakes through and around my foundation i would have to unscrew about 10 different fittings with almost no room to work. would it be safe to shut off the gas, drain the lines, wait a bit, then hacksaw through the pipe? i...

Where to find buidling codes online?

that's kind of what i figured, but i was hoping somebody had a website bookmarked with the basics. i know a lot of people just wing it and try to use common sense, but it would be nice to know for sure everything is right. i'll see what i can dig up.

Question about routing hot/cold supply lines

are there any general rules about this, other than being supported every xxx feet? i have all buried copper lines and need to fix a few small leaks and install cutoffs everywhere and was thinking about just replacing it all at once with hanging cpvc to get it over with.

Where to find buidling codes online?

i just bought my 1st house and my city allows owners to do their own work, but are required to abide by standard international codes, but they don't provide the specs for those codes. i've done searches, but only find the very expensive hard copies to buy, nothing online. i was hoping that...

Paint color for a small office/computer room?

here's what i ended up with. there was a seafoam color that i really liked, but i think ill use that in the bathroom instead. still need to paint the inside of the shelves and closet doors, but i like how it turned out. way better than the piss yellow it was before.

New home owner in TX checking in

at least it looks nice from the street. there's more, but i'll save some for later. luckily most of the really tacky stuff isn't expensive to fix, just time consuming. the drywall texture in this living room is 1/2" tall in some places and the fireplace looks worse in person. but...

    Header strength over garage door?

this would be the lowest part of the roof, and it goes up from there. i guess it would be a cross gable, right? the ugly carport and rotting covered porch are soon to go before anyone asks. :o

    Header strength over garage door?

measuring from the floor to the bottom of the 2x12's, the right side is 86", the left side is 85 3/4" and the middle is 85 1/2". i'm not sure how straight these things normally are, and how long if it all it would take it to sag over time. i just don't want the house to come down on me...

    Header strength over garage door?

my house originally had two 8' garage doors with a 1' center post, but i would like to put in a single 17' door instead. about 20 years ago the garage was enclosed and they took out the center post and put 2x4 framing in with a sliding door on each side and regular plywood siding in the middle...

Paint color for a small office/computer room?

currently it's a very pale yellow with built in shelves on one wall painted white, light tan carpet, 10x10. i kind of like a redish/maroon pastel color, but wonder if it would make the room feel too dark. the rest of the house is some variation of tan-mocha color so i want something a little...

New home owner in TX checking in

so i finally bought my first home last week and have a laundry list of things to do already. i'm really looking forward to it, i actually really like any kind of restoration job no matter what it's on. 28 year old single guy, foreman for a small lathe machine shop, raced cars/sportbikes on...

    Tips on replacing a subfloor?

seems pretty straight forward, rip it out and replace it. but what do you do about the part that is under walls? just cut around it?

When is P&B foundation too far gone?

well, the realtor never showed up and i guess the owner noticed me sitting outside. he is a foreigner that spoke very little english. i explained that i was coming to look at the house and he just walked off and shut the garage door behind him. i sat there a few minutes and he came out again...

When is P&B foundation too far gone?

first post here, so forgive me if this is a rookie question, i'm learning as i go! i'm looking for my 1st home, and found one that is absolutely PERFECT for what i want, but it might need to be re-leveled. what should i look for as far as the condition of the foundation? the...
