Getting up on the roof of my new home

I also have a steep roof as well and know I have to re-shingle it. I was thinking of doing it myself if I get enough nerve up! Funny, I'm scared to get on my roof, but can fight fires (vol here in VT) on a 75' ladder, attached by a big hook to it and step on a roof in the middle of winter with...

    Bad weather

Yup, areas around us here in VT got 16"+. We have another two storms headed for us for Sat. and Sunday. I enjoy being a guy with a snowblower, but filling it up 2-3 times a day sucks.... I'm only 31, so I can handle it, but I often take care of my older neighbors also... where are the kids in...

    Stone Foundation

Ok, so I guess I'll be the "guy" to tell you to do it from the inside..... My parents own a 200+ year old farm house in Vermont that was part of the underground railroad. Since this was two separate houses, that were pushed together, the stone foundation is only under the dining/living room...

    Wine Cellar.

Be a bit careful on the used barrels. You may need to clean them out before you pu them in your room. They may give off an oder and if not cleaned well enough, the bacteria could form into mold, etc. Enjoy!

    Any Advise for Tired Cabinets?

Ours in our 1955 cape are painted white. I was thinking of getting them back to natural wood. Wish we could swap! :-)

    Wine Cellar.

I have yet to buy a barrel for my wine making, but here is the best prices: http://www.bucket-outlet.com/oakbarrels.htm I know you can find used ones from CA, but shipping is horrible for the 55 gallon sized ones, whereby you can get small ones from the bucket-outlet.

    Wine Cellar.

I'm so jealous! I am building a wine cellar as well, but is put on hold as I finished my home theater. Now that is done, I need to finish the basement hallway before I can get to the wine cellar. I also make my own wine in that same area, so it is still used.... I sure hope that mine looks...

    Painting steel siding?

This is AWESOME info! I have a 1955 cape in Vermont and we have the chalking all over, so now I have an idea on how to clean it, prep and paint it. I have a 5 gallon set of air tools with a high and low pressure paint sprayer guns, so painting should be fun! Can I clean the siding at...

    Concrete Block Basement Remodel

Hi there! I have pics in my gallery that show what I did with our block basement to add walls on half of our basement. I didn't put any thoroseal on the brick before putting on the walls. I hope to do this on all of the other exposed walls. Enjoy the pics!

    Solar Panels for Heat?

I've uploaded a scanned pic of my parents house in my gallery area, so you can see them.

    Solar Panels for Heat?

Does anyone have solar panels on their home that collect heat? My parents purchased this and added it to our 100+ year old farmhouse where I grew up. They still live there and enjoy 1/4 of their heat from these 8 panels. I think they got these in the early/mid 80's and they use boxed/framed...

    Compost Pile

My wife and I got this unit last summer, and we started to get some soil, but we kept adding to it and we never could finish it (mistake #1). We ended up leaving it outside (mistake #2) and it is a frozen container.. This summer, I hope to add a starter pack to it, to re-activate it when it...

    Foundation insulation

Hi Dick! I was going to do this to my cape here in Vermont, but didn't find this product until after the first few snow storms at the end of '07. I plan on doing this over the summer. There is a company that sells Styrofoam insulation boards that have textured coatings on the outside...

    Rainwater Collectors

InspectorD - You could always build a dog house/shed like building for it and paint the roof with flat black paint and allow the sun to heat the dog house cover, keeping the water from freezing in the cold. I have not done this, but depending on how much $ you want to put into free water... not...

    On-demand water heaters

I've been thinking of doing this hear in the next year or so to our house. We currently have a gas hot water heater, rented from Vermont Gas. The rental alone is $130/yr. I was thinking of this as an alternative, but my plumbers who have done a number of installs with the recent "green"...

How many folks use the energy saving bulbs?

When we bought our home in 2005, I paid a pretty penny (about $250) and replaced every light bulb in our 1955 cape - 4 bedroom 1 bath with them. I now know that there are some new improved (2nd and 3rd generation) CFL's that provide "sun light" quality and also turn on immediately. I pay just...

    Hi

Hello everyone. My name is Eric (31 years old) and I live in cold Vermont. I am a computer programmer and have made it a "hobby" to improve our 1955 cape (first home - bought it in fall '05) and have done quite a bit. Here is a list of all that I've done.... 1. Re-painted 6/6 rooms in our...
