    Egress Windows

check out my post "Finishing my Basement" to see pictures of me cutting my egress windows out. InspectorD is right, windows let lots of light in making the rooms much more comfortable even if the window is on the north side of the house. Justin

    Precautions when cutting concrete

I would just go ahead and rent a gas powered wet saw from a rental company. You can do it with the circular saw if you want but make sure you have water on it to keep the dust down. Concrete dust does nasty stuff to your lungs. Check around for prices on renting, I think when I was looking to...

    staircase problem.

    Help with sistering/blocking floor joists

A beam perpendicular in the center of the joists, that is supported with posts, would reduce your joists span to 7' making your 2x10s much stronger. That is what INSPECTORD was trying to say. What is the dimension of this floor to be supported the other way??? If it is relatively short you...

Beginner Needs Help - Drywall Anchors

I agree with handyguys, if there is an inch and a half air gap between the concrete and the sheetrock then someone obviously put 2x2" furring strips on the wall to attach the rock to. a stud finder and regular wood screws are what you need. Justin

    raise a house

i thought it was funny when i went to look that it was one of the first couple of videos for house moving. a close second for the redneck house moving would have been the one where they lifted the trailerhouse part away from the rest of the house and set it down on the curb with a crane...

    New Basement

In the long run ICF always wins. if you use block or concrete you still have to frame out and insulate. Not to mention that if you go ahead and do your whole house out of ICf and concrete your main floor walls have no air gaps in them except for at the windows. Just my two cents, but I am...

    Finishing My Basement

Well InspectorD, most of my lack of being here has to do with this small problem. I should have listened to my wife when she told me not to set the laptop down on the armrest as I went to put Bella back down to bed. But I have also been slow at working down there with my daughter taking up...

    Finishing My Basement

Wow, its been forever since I've posted to this thread. I finally got my electrical, plumbing, and building inspections done and passed. I had to redo my plumbing because I didn't use the correct glue when going between the ABS and the PVC, even though the Oatey multi or general purpose says...

    A house made of straw

Straw buildings have an excellent R value. I would be interested in seeing a picture of the houses that you have seen down there, as I have only heard of straw construction. Eventually I think my dad wants to build a new farm shop out of straw but we have no plans yet. Justin
