    Wiring new fan

I am replacing an old ceiling fan/light and am confused by the wiring. The former setup = two wall switches control the light only, the fan is controlled by the pull chain only. The new fan has a remote which I will use to control the fan but the wall switches should still control the light. The...

    Refinishing Kitchen Cabinets

Well they look like real wood (veneer) to me. I had a house built in 1997 that looks exactly the same. I think you can sand and paint, but not stain. Put some knobs on those drawers! You also have room to add crown molding if you feel adventurous. It's not a bad kitchen but little touches...

    Suggestions with Kitchen Sinks???

If you haven't already purchased your countertops, it might be worthwhile to ask the countertop company to "throw in" a free sink (and faucet.) Many will do this even if they won't lower the overall price. Just ask questions about the sink they offer and compare it to handyguys post.

    Hi from NJ

This makes me think. . . Ask your handy grandparents, etc. for a lesson or two while they're here. Ask for that best-ever apple pie recipe, ask how that garden grows, ask how they tuned-up a car, ask how they rebuilt the attic, etc. Then don't neglect to share these things with future...

    any opinions of pull-out faucets?

I am shopping for a new kitchen faucet and considering one of the new (popular?) ones where the actual faucet head pulls out to act as a sprayer. I don't use a sprayer much but like to have the option. I'd rather have fewer holes in my new granite countertop, thus like the idea of combining it...

Moving kitchen sink - how far can vent lines travel?

I need to move my kitchen sink (and dishwasher and disposal) to an outside wall. I determined I have enough room to provide a 1/4" downward slope per foot the drain travels. The supply seems simple enough. I understand I need to insulate pipes on the outside wall. I do not know what is...

Removed outlets & switches but lost power to others?

Thanks guys. I reconstructed the layout and restored most of the power, except for the breaker I blew out completely. It was helpful to find the live wires vs. 'not live' and map out the holes in the studs to help remember where the wires traveled. I put a diagram in my 'gallery' on this site. I...

Removed outlets & switches but lost power to others?

To remove two kitchen walls I pulled out (and taped off) all the Romex from the 4 light switches and 3 outlets. I thought I would just lose the use of those 7 things but now several other outlets and lights on that side of the house will not function. Did I lose continuity somewhere? There are 4...

    move return air to floor?

I am tearing down walls to remodel my kitchen but one wall has a return air duct near the ceiling (no actual ducting in the wall, it's hollow between the studs.) There is only one other return air duct in the area (about ten feet away) but the room will be very open once the walls come down...
