    squeaky floor

For anyone to help, you'll need to tell us how the subfloor system is built. Is it built like a house or is there any gypcrete involved? Got any pics of how this level is built, perhaps of another area, not necessarily under your unit? How about some more info such as age, size, number of...

    Plywood spacing

Drywall to floor spacing, ¾" or so. Jaz

    Plywood spacing

I agree with the ⅛" between sheets, but have never seen any instructions that say ⅛" is good enough for perimeter gaps. I say minimum ¼". Jaz

Glue is not dry under vinyl on stairs.

Yup, and 3/32" notch is probably too much. * I have never made a mistake....I thought I did once....but I was wrong! :D You will learn to not ask those nice people anything that is too technical or requires experience. Jaz

Glue is not dry under vinyl on stairs.

If the vinyl is shiny on the back, I think you may have used the wrong adhesive. Read the container of adhesive again. It's sheet vinyl right? It's got a brand name and style/series name too. What size notch trowel did you use? Which is............? Jaz

Glue is not dry under vinyl on stairs.

You never said specifically what flooring you used. Vinyl, does not tell us much. We also need to know which adhesive you used and if the flooring was set into it right away, or if the adhesive was allowed to set or? Jaz

    flooring delemma

I disagree, I don't think it's the best way. You do not install glue-down sheet vinyl directly to ¾" underlayment. Most manufacturers tell you to install a proper ¼" instead. Among other reasons the ¼" will be much easier to remove when it's time. Loose lay or perimeter glued/stapled vinyls...

    flooring delemma

Fred, First decide what flooring you're gonna use and read their directions. I suggest you replace the particle board with ½" underlayment grade plywood then you'll be able to add the ¼" underlayment needed for the sheet vinyl. (not linoleum) You'll find ½" ply measures a bit thinner than...

Ceramic tiling over concrete abutting hardwood

I woulda removed some wood first which would have taken the floor down ¾" to the subfloor. Then I'd mud (sand cement) that area and continue the mud over the old brick making everything flat and level with the hardwood. I would remove about ¼" mud next to the hardwood and probably cut an...

Ceramic tiling over concrete abutting hardwood

Nelson, Your plan does not abide to the proper way to do the job on two levels. We do not install tile backer over concrete. We do not install tile backer over any plank or hardwood flooring. You made the job more difficult to finish correctly once you installed concrete over the...

New house with 10 lbs. underlay, but doesn't feel like it

I too am surprised the sales person didn't have you step on both choices to feel the difference. If you wanted softer, shoulda gone with 6 lb. It used to customary to use #6 on the main floors and #8 on steps. Jaz

    tiling info

Actually........the ideal way is to have the flange bottom on top of the finished flooring. However, if it's a little lower it'll still work. Just use a thicker wax ring or the shims as stated. Jaz

    Ceramic flooring issue

Well, got the right idea there Neal, but that's a stair nosing. Noob, you didn't supply enough info to give a good answer yet. You can start by giving your location cuz that may give us a clue on the methods used in your area. If the tiles are mortared direct to ply, we need to know the...

CBU under tub or after tub installation?

I was just wondering what type of CBU you used on the walls above the tub. Were you able to waterproof the walls, especially the window? Jaz

CBU under tub or after tub installation?

As Sam said, it's not a suggestion, it's a requirement. You mentioned wallboard around the tub. What's the finish covering going on these walls? Jaz

Installing tile floor using Ditra and heated floor mat

Joey, Please note that CallMeVilla got the info backwards. The warming mats go in first, then ditra over. If everything was done right and still in good condition, 5/8" @ 16" oc meets minimum standards. (thank you cheap-*** builder for using 5/8") You should be able to figure...

    Tile

No one can make you do it right, it's your house. One thing for sure you will get lots of practice doing it that way. I would not use a grout saw and not us an angle grinder. A multi-tool with the grout removal blade is the way. The relevant part of this video starts at 5:20...

    Somerset wood?

Hi Drew, Somerset makes many varieties of wood flooring and you didn't mention what you chose. I installed a bunch in my own house a few months ago and can say it's really, really "good stuff". We decided on Hickory in spice 4" wide. The finish is as good as the finest furniture...

How to even out a patched-in plywood floor

People used whatever was handy to help hide the gaps in the plank subfloor. It was common to use tarpaper as the underlayment under vinyl/rubber tiles and sheet vinyl or linoleum up to the '60's. Plywood was not used much in the subfloor system and 1/4" underlayment didn't become popular until...
