    Furnace shuts off and restarts back up repeatedly

    from afar, it sounds like the blower motor died and it's tripping out on high limit. Could just be a capacitor. Might be worth a service call if you aren't handy with testing electrics.

    wiring connections on a Robert Shaw standing pilot gas valve?

    Did this model come with the red jumper wire in the box?...Many R/Shaws need that in older apps.

    Gas supply shuts off early

    Depending on the year of the trane xl, the older models had two screw holes on the flame sensor. I remember one of my first times servicing one that I got it in the wrong hole and it was a good lesson....not saying that's your problem, but the flame should be covering it completely, not partially.

    Thanks for the welcome, nealtw. I've been taking a bit of a sabbatical from hvac for a few months. Body just can't handle the day to day of installs anymore. Have my own sheet metal shop set up in my basement and do some tinkering. I miss the challenge of the job still, but the hard work...

    Sounds like you are describing a "whole house fan" mounted in the ceiling. If your furnace is already in the attic getting fresh air, I don't see that it would be a problem to experiment with sealing it off in the winter. If anything, I would be concerned that maybe your system doesn't have...
