    kitchen counter top

I thought this an easy (somewhat) job. Mind you our Kitchen counter is square and true and I needed to raise it an inch after putting in the new pine floor anyway. New 3/4 plywood. Cement board. Tiles---check your local tile store for backroom stuff. I found really nice 13 inch turkish...

    Microlams or what?

Already checked. The angled braces are farther out to the sides and not in the area for the arch. The real challenge is going to be leveling the original floor to match the additions so that I can lay a new wood floor. I did something similar in my house when I layed a new pine plank floor...

    Wood paneling

Bought a Place for a rental which was owned by a two pack a day smoker for years. The panelling was actually tacky from tar. After a thorough cleaning two coats of white pigmented shellac (Bin or Kilz) and two oats of paint they looked like they could have been new walls. That was ten years...

    Microlams or what?

Same house different problem. Looking to put a 4.5 foot wide doorway/archway between two rooms. Problem is its a post and beam home and this was the original outside wall. Do not have to remove any of the "major" posts to complete this just one 4x4. Would normally put in an 8 inch header in...

Yup, mortised w/ pegs and no roof beam. Glad to hear someone else has been through this before. Hadn't thought about the eves insulation. Heck, I'm still vacuming up the cellulose I pulled down......Food for thought though. I was thinking of cutting 3/4 ply "triangles" to attach on both...

Ceiling span 3 foot on center

Thanks all. Yes this is a post and beam home. And Inspector I know hust what your talking about (regarding damage done by other people). On the first story I've torn out the interior walls. There are 12 x 16 beams spanning the structure every four feet (no other floor joists just pine plank...

Ceiling span 3 foot on center

Oh yeah. And calling these timbers 4X4's is being generous. This stuff had to be the culls left around. At some points there more like 3.5 X 2's, some still have the bark attached in spots.

Ceiling span 3 foot on center

Correct, the joists are basically collar ties/rafter ties and they are nailed to the SIDES of the rafters (w/ what looks like a few 10 penny nails) at least four feet up from the kneewall and have no support from the rafters above. I could pull them down by hand at this point. I'd install the...

Ceiling span 3 foot on center

Thanks for your quick reply. Kind of confirms what I suspected.

Ceiling span 3 foot on center

Renovating an old saltbox style house (1850's). Found the second story ceiling was bowed. The plaster had been removed and covered with sheetrock at some point. A crawl in the attic revieled 4X4 joists attached to the rafters, which are 3 feet on center, about 6.5 feet up the slope, with a...
