Hello all! Decided to get a little more active on some online forums. If folks have any questions regarding exterior improvements, especially related to gutters and water management, I am available! Feel free to PM. We have extensive experience with work on older homes, so hopefully we can help with historic preservation work as it relates to gutters and water management.

Thanks!
John

Hello and thanks for your offer. I have a cape cod style home with a shed dormer that extends across the rear if the house and has its own gutter and downspout that i have attached to underground pvc that leads to a creek at the back of my property. On either side of the shed dormer there is an area of the old roof (12/12) that comes from the peak. This "old roof" area (I call it the rake but not sure if that is the correct term) has no gutter and no downspout. As a result, when it rains hard, water pours off of that rake and splashes mud or mulch on to the house and also causes slight erosion in these areas also. I have seen a product called "rain handler" or something like that that supposedly causes the water coming off the roof to break up into smaller droplets and the design pushes the water a few feet out from the house. I am thinking about installing this product but i am not sure if it will work. Do you have any experience with this product? Any other recommendations? Thanks in advance.

Hey Jeff, Do you have pics of the area in question?

We've been called to replace Rain Handler with actual gutters a couple of times over the last nine years. So, I have limited experience with that product, but the experience I've had has been negative. Why not install gutter and downspout instead of Rain Handler?

John - thanks for the quick reply. I am attaching 3 pictures. The first shows the rear of the house. The second shows the rake area I am describing to the left of the downspout. The third picture shows the staining and erosion from water splashing. Let me know your suggestions

I think that adding a short gutter with an elbow coming off of the bottom that ties into your existing downspout would be the most effective way to manage the water in that area. The Rain Handler option, or installing a diverter up there, would only provide a limited amout of control of the water. You could DIY or expect to pay a minimum trip charge to a gutter guy.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Alex! I think I'll try to see if there's an alert I can set up for certain topics, like "gutters" and "copper."

That sounds like a good idea. If you figure out how to do that, let me know? I'm not terrible at internetting, but I'm not great either... Anyways, it's always great to have specialists around here!
