My son-in-law found this bank of batteries when he moved into his house. It was in the back of the garage with no hook-ups in sight. Any idea what it was for?

Sort of looks like old batteries from a telephone system. What they are doing in a home is anybody's guess.

They look like 100 year old Edison cells and my guess is if he cleaned them up and filled them they would take and hold a charge.

Don’t throw them out they are collectable to some geek windmill types.

I was thinking it was some sort of UPS-type setup for the house, but wondered how it could make AC. I also wondered how much power it could provide.

Batteries for phone??? Gawd, I'd hate to see the size of the phone...:p

They didn’t have inverters like that back in the day. If they had backup power to the house it might have been a few lights that didn’t care if it was DC.

Phone exchanges had all kinds of batteries as they used DC and rooms and rooms of relay switches.

Those look like they could have been from an electric car or most likely a windmill kit.
