I've tried on several occasions for up to 20 minutes.

It just won't spin on. Do I need WD40? Baking soda and vinegar to clean up the rust?

does the ring move easily on the unit.
Have you put a screw driver in one of the lugs to help turn it while you have it there?
Cleaning off some rust would not hurt. Maybe a little Vaseline to make it slide might help.

Putting a screwdriver on one of the lugs and tapping it with a hammer can help drive the ring around the mount. Even new they can need to be snugged up with this method as you may not be able to hand tighten them. At least that is my experience.

Is this the same disposal that was clogged with molasses? It may be time to put that thing out of its misery.

You can purchase the sink bracket and the ring separately.

Which could lead to a whole nuther thread.

While it's disconnected, make sure it spins.

The last time I did one I used a scissor jack to take the weight of the disposal off my hands while I worked the fastening mechanism.

Use a small mirror to see all around the mechanism to check for misalignments.

The mech. swings thru a very small arc between fully engaged and not engaged.
