Ashes in the lawn

I was talking to a friend of mine the other day and he said he's been distributing the ash from his burn pile over his yard to help the grass grow.

Anyone heard of this? I have a bun pile and before I start putting ash everywhere I want to make sure it's legitimate advice.

I think the idea is it's a form of potash. My dad used to put ash around the tomatoes. I don't think it can hurt.

I will be starting this soon. My Landlord is bringing me a 50 gallon drum to burn off the fallen trees in.

Update: It's working quite well. My lawn looks a lot better than my neighbors who water frequently.
