is there an easy way to change the center swing door going out to the patio into a french door configuration. the door openeing is too small for the larger pieces of furniture and i'm hoping by making it a french door i would have sufficient room.

It can be done, I think. Can you post a photo of what you have? Do you what to modify what have or just replace it?
