We have an old fireplace insert installed in a massive Brick fireplace. The fireplace is approximately 5' wide, 4' deep and 7'6" high (to the ceiling). There are also what looks like an area for storing wood on wither side. We are thinking about tearing it down but I'm not sure what the best tool for it would be.

I've torn down two fireplaces and a whole bunch of decorative brick in my front yard and used a pneumatic air chisel. It works great if you have an air compressor.

Sounds like a lot of work to gain 20 square foot of floor space.

Without photos I wouldn’t venture a guess on what problems you might have in taking it out or what method would be best.
