Need help from window professionals

Was replacing my apartments window springs. Still doesnt work. Had to open the window and put like a piece of wood in order for it to stay open. Do i have to do anything special when replacing them ?

Post a picture along with the type of window it is. Wood double hung, vinyl, aluminum.

If I can recall correctly, you have to keep the spring tube from turning while extending it to attach the other end (a lot of tension). Easier as a two man job.
