I've been getting conflicting opinions about mounting something on brick where you need to drill into it. One faction says drill into the mortar and the other says to drill into the brick. Which does the least damage or provides the most stable mount? It's for hanging metal wall art on the side of the house.

Hello SavvyCat:
Most brick is too brittle to drill with a common hammer drill. You will burn up a bit every 3 holes or so. If the mortar is not over 50 years old, I would use it to anchor into; its hard as concrete but not as hard as baked bricks.

Drilling the mortar joint will be much easier. Just make sure you use a nice long screw and/or anchor to get plenty of bite. If the screw is too short it will tend to work out of the mortar joint a little easier.
