I have an outside breaker panel, located next to my meter, that contains breakers for my four outside A/C units and Pool Equipment. This panel also feeds two breaker panels located in the garage that contain all of the other breakers for the house. The garage panels are approx. 15-25ft of wire from the outside panel. Total is 400A - 200A for outside and 200A feeding garage panels. I'm considering the following Surge Protection Devices, which setup would you choose?
#1 - Install Intermatic IG2240 SPD as a Type 1 device at the outside meter. This device has its own breaker switch and removable modules that can be replaced after they die. The specs are: In(kA) 10 - SCCR(kA) 10. PLUS install an Intermatic IG1240RC3 SPD as Type 2 on the garage breaker panel that has the downstairs circuits which include all of the kitchen appliances, most of the home computers, TVs etc. The specs on this SPD are: In(kA) 20 - SCCR(kA) 50
#2 - Install 3 IG1240RC3s as Type 2 devices: The first would be on the breaker panel next to the meter on the bus that contains all of the breakers for the outside ACs etc. The top leg of this breaker panel that feeds the other garage breakers would not have very good protection at this point. Then I would install a 2nd and 3rd IG1240RC3 in the two garage breaker panels.
(I only listed the In(kA) and SCCR(kA) specs because most of the other specs were identical)
Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide
