I have a newish gas water heater. Today I noticed that there was no hot water. Do I have to call a plumber? Are there some things I can try to troubleshoot before spending money?
If it's a gas-fired unit, check the pilot light or igniter system. You can check the pilot yourself by pulling off the cover plate where the gas line goes in at the bottom of the heater. You'll probably have to call a plumber if it's electronic ignition to determine the exact cause of the problem.
