Help! We moved into our house a year ago and the previous owners resurfaced the brick fireplace with black granite tiles. We hate it and want to resurface. How do we get rid of the horrible work they did and start fresh?

Welcome Khechfellner:
First, use leather gloves and full face protection. Then, use an electric chipping hammer with a chisel bit and try to stay between the two materials or in the mortar. It can be done but it will create a lot of dust and glass-like shrapnel.
You have our sympathy and admiration for your bravery.

Glenn's precautions are true facts. You can do it and will enjoy the results. The tiles will splinter and fly like little shards of glass. I would wear long sleeves along with the leather gloves and face mask. It can be done even with a cold chisel and hammer, but the electric chipping hammer would be easier to get between the tiles. Then again you may have built up energy just to get rid of granite and the hammer and chisel will work.

depending on what material you wish for resurfacing, you may not have to remove the granite tiles,,, we staple on wire mesh then apply polymer-modified cement,,, just another method to consider :)
