I bought a set of very heavy (1.75" thick doug fir) prairie-style french door slabs from a Craigslist seller. The glass is in really good shape, and none of the wood is rotten. However, there are at least 2 coats of oil paint on everything. The top coat is probably 20 years old, and the original coat is who knows how old...probably 40-50 years old, and may be lead paint.
How to I completely strip this stuff without damaging the sweet fir underneath? Anyone care to suggest a chemical stripper, or some other method?
I have all of the hardware off, and will need to slightly trim the slabs to be fit into our front hall closet, replacing the hollow-core bifolds (the devil's design) that are currently there.
Thanks!
