Is there a vent/ductwork above it in the attic... or wires?

I have a freash air vent to allow air to enter when fans in bathroom or kitchen is running.

I think it's one of those deer things that you put on your bumper. That way the deer can get out of the way of your swiftly traveling wall

On a less corny note, it may be a small vent to equalize pressure within the house (if that is a problem in your climate?) Since it is right next to the attic hatch, can you post a pic from the other side of this gizmo? You can also do a quick visual check to see if light can be seen thru it. That will tell you if it is a sealed unit or not.
