Hey guys I am new to this forum I have been working on doing my ceiling in my kitchen. My house was built in 1900. The ceiling paint is peeling in some places ( not all) I am unsure if I should just remove all the paint and start from scratch or only do the 'loose'paint the other problem is that in some places where I peel the paint a grainy grey substance exist and I don't think I can paint over that.. what is that stuff and how should I handle fixing the ceiling? thanks guys!

That grey stuff sounds like plaster.

Clean it all up and start familiarizing yourself with mixing plaster ...get creative if you want.

Messy but worth it. keeps the old character to the home.

Other option is to sheetrock over it...and put molding in the corners.:)

In these circumstances you'd be better off putting in a bit of work and giving the ceiling a good rubbing down and maybe even a quick skim coat of plaster before repainting. If you are unsure of how to do that it is quite straightforward and you can find a good hints and tips article on it on our website.

Cheers
