:)Hello, I have a 50yr old house, I need to replace my shower diverter. To do this I will have to cut into existing cement board. My concern is how to patch the replacement cement board to the remaining existing cement board. I hope I made my question clear.

you patch cement bored with tape and mortar

can you cut the wall behind the valve and access from the back?

Frodo has a good question. if you can access the plumbing from an adjacent room, you won't have to break thru the cement board or the finished shower enclosure at all. It is much easier to close the hole in drywall.
