Hi - I know this sounds kinda nuts, but does it look like my chimney cap is installed correctly? Also which one is for my wood-burning fireplace and which one is for my natural-gas boiler? I hear random clicks and thumps in my house (1924 Craftsman) and I don't know if it's pests (I've looked everywhere, and except for noise there isn't any indication) and I didn't know if there could be rodents or birds getting into my chimney.

Deeply regretting buying a house (just over 2 years in it) but trying to make the best of it. Thanks.

The one with the screen, IE. spark arrester is for the wood burning fireplace and the noises are probably from expansion and contraction.

Please explain more what you mean by expanding and contracting. This noise happens at multiple times throughout the day and throughout the year so I assumed it wasn't just due to weather.

Some of the houses in my area have wire cages over both the spark arrester (thanks for the term :) ) and their boiler furnace chimney. Do you recommend that or no?

The expansion and contraction can be from the age of the dwelling, from the effects of natural heating and cooling or the class of the flue material. Older dwellings get loose and creak.

The spark arrestors serve a dual purpose, the second of which is to prevent vermin infestation, however, fuel fired appliances tend to be their own repellant.

But then, BBQ squirrel is considered a delicacy in some communities.

I was thinking that a larger cage over both chimneys would be useful since I'm neither running my boiler, nor using my fireplace during 90+F summers.

Depending upon how it is installed, with facilitating routine , periodic flew inspections.
