I want to construct a metal workshop (roughly 2000sqft) ...

Starting to reach out to contractors on the slab and getting different opinions. We have very little soil, maybe 5" before you hit solid rock. One contractor suggested a 4" slab. Seems a little thin? But I really have no clue, so need some advice.

Totally depends on the soil conditions and what you plan on doing in the building. If you are going to anchor machine tools it is much different than warehouse space. If you live in a cold climate you may want to think about in floor heating and then that might change the thickness as well.

Give the group more detail and I think you will get a full plan.

Also how large is the equip. which will be used in the shop?

It's in Texas, South Texas.

We have about 5" of soil and then solid, solid rock.

I'm just going to use it for storing boat, Jeeps, etc. plus do woodworking in.

If that’s the case I would remove the dirt and bring it to grade with 5”.
