Previous owner of this house did a bathroom remodel. There is tile on the walls which overlaps the shower pan. They had a thick 3/4" bead of caulk completely filling the gap at the bottom of the wall tile. This not only looked bad but was a pain in the *** to remove.

My question is: Do I even need to put caulk there at all? The tile edge overlaps the shower pan. Any water that splashes will be pulled by gravity back down into the shower. What I am worried about is if I don't caulk, over time, water exposure and hot vapor penetration may get up under there and loosen the tile adhesion? Looking for advice.

Thanks,
Peter

Since the caulk was considered prudent, when applied, it may have been considered as necessary, so in that event I would , and because the tile lands above the pan apron, after removal and cleaning apply a thin bead of color matched caulk.
